We are looking for a tarsier conservation assistant and for a Philippine/Asian insect identification assistant (please see below)

Tarsier conservation Project assistant

We seek a voluntary field assistant for a minimum of 6-months, live-in position, (longer preferred) suited to persons who have studied within the field of Primatology, Ethology or closely related Zoology fields and who are looking for field experience to further their professional career.

Gain valuable experience as a technician in the field of conservation and management of a sensitive species, by assisting with a conservation breeding program of Tarsier syrichta.

Targeting work in the areas of; investigation of habitat, food resource development and behaviour studies will be required so to development guide lines for a captive breeding program.

Duties include but not limited to:

Food research, development and maintenance of natural food sources.

Handling of insects and other small wildlife.

Record-keeping, documenting of insects and compiling of regular reports.

Enclosure development and sustainability.

Habitat monitoring. (all weather/day and night)

Behaviour studies.

Education program development.

Sustainable eco friendly livelihood development for the local people.

 

Irregular working hours are required, including night monitoring in remote forested areas.

You will be working directly with English speaking staff and some Filipino speaking staff members.  You must be highly self-motivated to work in all conditions, physical fitness, independent, resourceful, and enjoy the challenge of working with a diverse group of people of different backgrounds, in a very isolated location.

Please note that this is a voluntary position located in a remote location with limited cell phone, internet and power access.  Accommodation will be provided and we will give a basic allowance of 4,000 pesos per month to cover food.   (Flights, visa and insurance expenses will not be covered)

Philippine/Asian insect identification assistant

We are looking for an expert in Philippine/Asian insect identification.  Must have experience of conducting insect collecting in the field.  Also some knowledge of insect breeding is needed to help improve breeding colonies as a sustainable food supply for the tarsier.

Short term stay (1 up to 6weeks).  (Longer would be on case by case approval).

Duties include but not limited to:

Food research, development and maintenance of natural food sources for the Philippine Tarsier.

Collecting/trapping of insects in the field, identification and documenting of insects found in the area.

Insect breeding methodology, especially for local Orthoptera, Phasmatodea species.

Identification of local food plants for Coleoptera and Hemiptera species.

Natural development of habitat for sustainable insect life.

Irregular working hours are required, including night trapping.

The selected entomologist will be working with one international volunteer Primatology student, local English speaking staff and some Filipino speaking staff members.  You must be highly self-motivated to work in all conditions and able to work unsupervised (as the project leaders are not onsite to oversee day to day work), physical fitness, resourceful, able to work with limited equipment and enjoy the challenge of working with a diverse group of people of different backgrounds, in a very isolated location.

Please note that this is a voluntary position located in a remote location with limited cell phone, internet and power access.  Volunteering in an isolated tropical area with basic living quarters is not for the faint hearted; this is not a glossy volunteer job.   Accommodation is provided, but very simple native hut (and shared). We give a basic allowance of 1,000pesos per week to cover food.   (Flights, visa and insurance expenses will not be covered).
